One facet of the National Seizure Disorders Foundation mission is to help children adjust seizure disorders in their own lives or lives of people around them. The following information explains how you can help NSDF help children adjust to seizures and seizure disorders.
Are You Ready to Help?
- Do you know of a small child living with a seizure disorder?
- How comfortable is this child in sharing his/her experience with peers?
- Are you currently looking for a tool that will ease this child’s understanding of seizure disorders in order that he/she may feel more empowered and comfortable to overcome stigma placed upon the seizure disorders community by society?
FACT: 45,000 children develop seizure disorders each year
This fact prompts the need for creative material to explain their disorder to their peers. Mommy, I Feel Funny! is a true story that helps children adjust to seizures by relating to children at their level and sharing some of the same experiences they may have as they experience seizures and seizure disorders. National Seizure Disorders Foundation recommends that Mommy, I Feel Funny! be used in public and private elementary schools across America as well as pediatricians offices and private homes of pediatric seizure patients.

Danielle,
You have given me hope that all of this will be in the past someday. Your book [Mommy, I Feel Funny!] has told me “No, you’re not the only one with seizures.” I can honestly say if I didn’t write you that first letter, I don’t know where I would be with this. You taught me how to be strong. You encouraged me to never give up. You are an amazing person and your book will go far! You are one of the few people I can completely relate to when it comes to having epilepsy and it will be great for young children experiencing the challenge to read your book.
All My Love,
Kristy M. Derrick
I purchased this book to read with my son who does not have epilepsy. It is very well written to explain what epilepsy is and how someone feels if they have it. Both my son and I loved the book. You don’t need to have epilepsy to read this book. It help both myself and my son to understand what epilepsy is. I would recommend this book to everyone. – S. Worthley
“A delightful and inspirational story about a girl who refuses to let epilepsy interfere with her life. It is a joyful and cherished resource for helping children understand epilepsy.”

Tonya,
That’s really great to have a resource for children…
My son has epilepsy since he was 1 and thank God, his very last EEG came back normal
and we are weening him off his prescription….
I know how tough it is for parents and the children, especially when it comes to things like seizure disorder, which we truly don’t have a clear understanding of….
Thanks so much for informing people about this.
Best Regards,
James

Hello Tonya,
Sadie in France here,
I think you are doing a fantastic job of bring this subject to the attention of others who might not other wise have any exposure to if. I has quite shocked by the numbers of children affected each year.
My sister in law is now a women of 35 but after a bicycle accident as a child of 9 she has lived with the condition of epilepsy from that age, it can be quite frightening to experience seizures if one has no exposure to them.
Sadie
Sadie,
Thank you for your comment.

When National Seizure Disorders Foundation began it was with the intention to help people like your sister in law find peace living with a disorder that the general public is afraid to address. Tonya,
This is such an important part of helping children to understand what is happening to them. When I was a child and had my tonsel removed nothing was explained to me of what would happen. Many years later I still have a problem when I need to have surgry done. You are doing wonderful work for people who suffer from a disorder that can be controled but needs to be understood too.
Joyce, Thank you for sharing a part of your story in your comment.
One of the reasons National Seizure Disorders Foundation is so important is for the support and education of the 45,000 children that get diagnosed annually. Hi Tonya,
What a great idea for children, not only for children who have the problem but for others to better understand differences in their playmates, their friends and people in general. I wonder if there are many children’s books like this? Either way, kudos to the author and kudos to you for spreading the word.
