  3. Hi Tonya!

What a nice blog. This is a great place for people in the same situation to go to. Nice job!

  4. Hi Tonya.
Its great to see the support you’re offering people on this site. I remember a few years ago when one of my children was dangerously ill for over a year. Having somewhere to go to share how I felt was key to keeping me going and being emotionally strong enough to support my son.

    Best wishes

    • Support and education are key in managing seizure disorders. For most seizure patients the journey is not over even after seizure control is maintained. The life long journey of managing seizure disorders is just one reason I have built NSDF and continue to present support and education to patients, caregivers, and professionals. Thank you for your compliments and support.

  8. Hi Tonya,

I’m very happy that we got to connect this week in the TSA.

I’d like to tell you my complete story sometime, but your blog topic hits very close to home. My son was diagnosed with epilepsy when he turned one years old. We are blessed that they are controlled with medicine.

Thanks so much for writing about this topic. It is certainly something that the world needs to understand better as people don’t really understand it.

    My Deepest Regards,

I am lucky to not know anyone with this disorder, but will bookmark your site as a reference should I down the road. Thank you again for all that you are doing!

    • Beth, Thank you for taking time to stop in, read what we’re about, and leave a beautiful comment of quality. I appreciate you bookmarking the site for future reference. I’ve heard 1 in every 100 people will either experience a seizure, witness a seizure, or care for someone with a seizure disorder at one point in a lifetime. It’s my belief many more will be affected by seizures. NSDF is on a crusade to bring order to seizure disorders. If you know of anyone needing our assistance, please refer them to the website. If you have any ideas to help me bring in donations in order to gain non-profit status so we can help even more patients and caregivers, please let me know. We’re focusing most efforts on fund raising at this point. We have so many wanting to back NSDF yet waiting on our non-profit approval. Again, thank you for the comment. Blessings – Terrific Tonya

  11. Hi Tonya,

I don’t know anyone with epilepsy, but I discovered early in my adult life that it is possible to have seizures even without having epilepsy. My first husband suffered from a brain tumor. Surgery was risky, and not only did it NOT remove all of the tumor, but it rendered him a left hemi-plegic.

Bob was hospitalized for 17 months before he died. At one point, he was transferred to an acute care hospital for surgery to remove kidney stones. Somehow, during the transfer, someone neglected to write down all of his drugs on the forms. The growing tumor exerted pressure on the brain. I knew he needed certain drugs for seizure prevention, but the nurses couldn’t go on my word alone. The neurosurgeon was in surgery… he didn’t come for two hours. And during that two hours I watched helplessly as my husband suffered countless petit mal seizures.

The neurosurgeon was… irate, to put it mildly… when he was able to get away and tend to Bob. It was frightening, watching Bob suffer those small seizures back to back. But I didn’t know that enough of those would lead to a grand mal, which could easily have been fatal for Bob in his weakened condition.

You’re doing a wonderful work, Tonya… a blessing to many. Keep it up!

Sending you a warm healing virtual hug. I do feel your grief. Thank you for sharing personal details with my readers. Reading your experience helps other caregivers and patients know they are not alone and it helps reveal reality to the non-affected public. I am deeply grateful you posted this tender experience.

I hear so many stories similar to your story. Each story stirs my passion to further educate the public and support the patients, caregivers, and professionals. Your story is important to raise awareness of the abuses of education in the area of seizure patient treatment. With your permission, may I use the experience ( with or without your name) within a future post under Community Voiceon the National Seizure Disorder Foundation website?

It is a fact a person can have a seizure without having epilepsy. Epilepsy is the umbrella term used to encompass seizure disorders whether they have explanation or not. two or more seizures within a year span an the patient is considered epileptic. This is just medical knowledge to enhance your comment. The virtual doors of NSDF are always open to you.

  15. Hi Tonya. You have a wonderful site here, full of color and hope. I actually met a woman who is a friend of a friend, and she had the cutest little siezure service dog. I had never heard of that before, and thought it was such a wonderful idea. It is great work you are doing here.

Best to educate yourself and others to avoid fear and abuse of information. When you want to know more, you know how to connect with me:) – Terrific Tonya

  16. Tonya:

This is a wonderful Blog! And very much needed. I have a bit of experience with this as my wife has had 2 grand Mal seizures…The first occurred around 3:30am in 1983…while we were sleeping I knew right away she was having a (We called it Grand Mal ) seizure…In 2002 she had another such seizure at work. These seizures seem to be brought on by undue amounts of stress. Fortunately for us she has found a good medication that does not cause a lot of weird side effects. We also have a good friend who’s 40 year old daughter seems to have chronic seizures since her 20′s that have been hard to treat , I will try to get her connected here.

    Take Care
    Matt

    • Thank you Matt for the kind words and for spreading the good news about the availability of information at NSDF. When you do refer someone to the site, point out we have a forum on site ready for use. So good to hear your wife is on a medication that agrees with her and controls her seizures. Please let me know if I can be of more help to you, your wife, and your friends.

  19. Tonya,

This platform is amazing, and full of useful information, for all who need support in this area. I have a wife and several friends, with Epilepsy. I have been a care taker, for over 17 years. I have done research for over 30 years, in this field.

It is a wonderful location, where we can share our stories. We can feel, no one is ever alone! We have given up jobs, and time. To take care of our love ones, who are effected by this, disorder. We will never stop loving them, and caring. It is just a warm feeling, to be able to have a platform of like-minded care takers. Serving, with a true heart.

Please, keep on doing all the wonderful work, here! I for one, will spread the knowledge of this location, to the masses.

Thank you for caring, and sharing with us!
